In the olden days in Germany and Austria, some people kept a frog, and a tiny ladder, in a jar half-filled with water for predicting the weather. If the frog stayed put rain would come. But if the frog climbed up the ladder the sun would come out.

In ancient Greece when cinnamon merchants were asked why their spice was so expensive gave this reason. They said that cinnamon was found in the nests of large birds on mountain cliffs too high for anyone to climb. Hunters laid out huge chunks of freshly killed meat for the birds to eat. The birds would then fly down and carry off the meat to their nests. But because the nests were not strong enough to bear the weight, they broke off and fell to the ground. The man would then come out of their hiding place and pick up the cinnamon.

In 1934 the Cunard Company of Britain built a luxury liner and decided to call it the 'Queen Victoria'. But first Sir Thomas Roydon, on Cunard's board of directors, had to ask King George the fifth for permission to do so. Roydon asked his highness " Can the ship be christened after the greatest queen this country has ever known?" King George replied " That's the greatest compliment ever paid to my wife. I'll ask her." And so, the 'Queen Mary' was named.
